Türkiye's Geographical Indication Pearl Goes Global

August 30, 2025 · Geopedi

The Bursa Black Fig (Bursa Siyah İnciri), one of Türkiye's most valuable agricultural products, continues to take its well-deserved place in world markets. According to the latest data, in 2024 the Bursa Black Fig was exported to no fewer than 32 countries, marking a major achievement for Türkiye's agricultural exports. These exports create significant added value for both producers and the national economy.

What Makes the Bursa Black Fig So Special?

The Bursa Black Fig stands apart from other fig varieties with its unique taste, aroma, and large size. Protected by a geographical indication, the product attracts strong interest, especially in the European market. Thanks to its high fructose content and thin skin, it is considered ideal for both fresh consumption and the food industry.

In 2024, the Bursa Black Fig found its place in many markets, led by European countries. Its top export destinations were Germany with 10.28 million dollars, Austria with 6.52 million dollars, and the Netherlands with 5.21 million dollars. Demand is also growing steadily in Middle Eastern and Far Eastern markets. This growth shows that the product's international brand value is on the rise.

The Contribution of the Geographical Indication

Geographical indication registration has played a major role in helping the Bursa Black Fig secure a solid position in the global market. Geographically indicated products offer consumers quality and reliability while providing producers with a price premium. The Bursa Black Fig has strengthened this advantage even further by obtaining geographical indication registration in the European Union as well.

Opportunities and Challenges Ahead

Growing exports bring new opportunities as well as challenges. Logistics, cold-chain transport, and marketing strategies are among the critical factors for the Bursa Black Fig to reach wider audiences. Factors such as global climate change and rising production costs also require producers to build a sustainable growth strategy. In addition, there are core labelling requirements under the new EU Regulation (EU) 2024/1143. Compliance deadline: May 14, 2026.
