Geographical Indication Products: Economic Strength and Cultural Preservation
Based on 2021 EuroSAT data, geographically indicated products command a market worth €200 billion globally and €70 billion in Europe, with their largest markets found in Singapore and the United States. Given the EU's considerable market share, it is essential that Turkey's geographically indicated products secure their place in these markets.
Examples from abroad
Examples from abroad illustrate this clearly
(Source FAO, 2018):
In terms of Selling Price:
- Tête de Moine Cheese (Switzerland): 4% increase in the domestic market, 57% increase in the export market.
- Penja Black Pepper (Cameroon): 120% increase.
- Taliouine Saffron (Morocco): 500% increase.
Kona Coffee (USA): 250% increase in production (1995–2015); 36% increase in the number of producers (1991–2012).
- Kona Coffee (USA): 250% increase in production (1995–2015); 36% increase in number of producers (1991–2012).
- Tête de Moine Cheese (Switzerland): 300% increase in production volume (1986–2014).
Beyond these economic impacts, geographically indicated products create value, generate dynamism in employment and production, help preserve rural populations and prevent migration, and safeguard traditional knowledge and cultural values.
However, for all these effects to materialize, it is also essential to prevent counterfeiting of products, ensure that audits are properly conducted, and create an environment where consumers can access reliable products. In this regard, the European Commission has enacted several measures — chief among them preventing the counterfeiting of products on digital platforms and stopping the registration of misleading domain names or trademarks (see the European Commission's "Geographical Indication Protection for Craft and Industrial Products and Amending" dated April 13, 2022).
In an increasingly globalized and digitalized world, protecting food products in particular from counterfeiting is becoming ever more challenging. Given that the vast majority of geographically indicated products are agricultural or food items, it is becoming far more important for consumers to access reliable information about GI products, their producers, and the cultural backgrounds of these products. As a result, leveraging evolving technology for this purpose has now become unavoidable.
