Gemlik Olive
Gemlik Olive… Olive cultivation has been known and practiced in Gemlik for centuries, as it has throughout all of Anatolia. Gemlik is renowned in our country for the cultivation of black table olives. Historically, Gemlik and its surrounding region have served as the central hub for table olive production. In fact, it is recorded that almost all members of the Gemlik Chamber of Commerce and Industry—established in 1857 as one of Turkey's oldest chambers—were engaged in olive farming during those years.
Olive cultivation has been a tradition in Gemlik for centuries, echoing the ancient agricultural heritage of Anatolia. Gemlik is renowned across the country specifically for its black table olives, and the region has long served as the heart of table olive production. This deep-rooted connection is evidenced by historical records: nearly all members of the Gemlik Chamber of Commerce and Industry—founded in 1857 as one of Turkey’s oldest chambers—were reportedly engaged in olive farming during its early years.
Agriculture is highly developed in Gemlik. Olive production is the district’s primary agricultural activity, and it is recognized as one of the regions where Turkey's most delicious table olives are grown. Olive processing holds a significant place in Gemlik's industry. Approximately 80% of the population living in the district center is engaged in trade, with the trade of salted olives, olive oil, and soap being the foremost sectors (Bursa Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, 2021b).
